I (and my clients/students) have been navigating our lives using what I call “The Mystic Map” for several years now. I keep thinking that everyone knows it. And I keep thinking that one of these days, I’m going to write a clear book or start teaching seminars about it. But because of where I am on the map, I’m not sure when that will be...
And yet, this map can change everything for embodied souls at a certain stage on their journey (perhaps you, reading this). When you really understand it, you suddenly know where you are, and why everything you have been doing hasn’t been working (although it once did, and still does for other people). I deeply, passionately, want to get this point across, because it’s absolutely not out there in the megacophony of teachers, teachings, websites, coaches, endless repetitions by wannabes of teachings they have heard and learned to spout... (whether it’s law of attraction or impermanence or spiral dynamics!).
This isn’t one of those things — it’s a direct download. And knowing it works spectacularly well. So it just occurred to me that in the meantime, until I get this out there in the way I got my previous work (motherwave, soulwave) out there, perhaps I should try to convey this mystic map of reality in a short blog post. And now I’m realizing I can’t, because I really need to SHOW you the map. I will have to draw it out and upload it, or make a video, or something. So for now, as a preparation, I want to explain the difference between metaphysical and mystical. This is so crucial to understand that you could waste a lifetime on this confusion.
Meta means beyond, and meta-physical means beyond the physical, and really refers to the plane or dimension of “mind.” It’s been the Next Big Thing for more than 100 years, with the explosion of New Thought at the end of the 19th Century, weirdly “rediscovered” as The Secret a few years ago. And the metaphysical also includes all of psychology, and even mindfulness. It includes everything pertaining to an individual mind trying to lead its human through life’s challenges.
Most of us who consider ourselves “on the path” have already (mostly) made a transition from struggling with the world on a physical level (hard labor) to using our minds for survival and to improve our lot. We are already in the metaphysical dimension of using our intelligence to control and manipulate our reality. And we have probably played with the higher metaphysical arts of trying to “think and grow rich.” Or at least to NOT go around thinking “I’m destined to be poor.” We know that thoughts have some organizing effect on reality.
I was passionately into this approach for many years, (even though I also knew about surrendering to a higher consciousness, because I had received so many miraculous and awakening experiences and graces that had nothing to do with me visualizing or affirming anything). But when things in my seminar business started to become a struggle (after the first few years of pure, abundant flow) I turned to Law of Attraction with a kind of desperation. Except, of course, that you can’t be desperate; you radiate confidence;-)
I created quite an elaborate manifestation, perhaps because of my clear thinking and intentions, and I have to say, it was quite complete in many ways: A marriage, a successful school, beautiful home, friends and community.
Then everything fell apart really badly. Or really well. As it was falling apart, however, I was so trained in thinking creatively and productively that although I was hurting about as badly as it’s possible to hurt, I mostly brought my thinking back to a kind of philosophical and optimistic place. Along the lines of “whenever you seem to lose, something better is coming along.”
I mention this because, although this breakdown was the beginning of my life’s second breakTHROUGH into The Mystical (aka Oneness), I didn’t let go of my metaphysical “good habits.” In fact, I was pretty conscious of what I was thinking, and quite careful to keep it productive (again, while also allowing my feelings to be felt in my body and breathed through). (P.S. In case you didn’t notice, negative thinking is an attempt to feel your feelings through your mind, which gives rise to an endless hamster wheel of more negative thoughts).
I said “second breakthrough in the the Mystical” because that Presence that I love to call God (all the New Agey work-arounds just don’t convey its majesty and intelligence and personal-yet-impersonal love) first came to me quite unexpectedly when I was an 18-year-old atheist. I became a meditating monk for 12 years, through my 20s. But since then, aged around 30, I had been exploring Da Metaphysical — i.e., psychology, feelings, beliefs, and so on.
This time, in my 50s, as things fell apart and my heart was broken (by many circumstances) I began to have another awakening into the fact that there is only One.... Thing. Except it’s not a thing. One None-Thing. One Being. One Doing. I am part of it. It knows me. I can relax. It is carrying me back into itself. I don’t have to work so hard to “create realities” or “heal myself” or “manifest abundance.” In fact, all that had stopped working and given me a big push-back.
Because what I really wanted, and want, more than success (apparent), and outer love (which turned out to be apparent) and so on, is the experience of supreme relaxation and bliss which comes from knowing the Divine. Not as a “Force” that I am using to fulfill my desires, but as a mystery into which I am surrendering, asking that it use me!
The teacher Yeshua (Jesus) said: “Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven and all else shall be added unto you.” He also said: “Don’t worry about what you shall eat, where, how to get a roof over your head, how to find a soulmate. Because your Father (Abba, meaning Daddy was the word he used, in Aramaic) in heaven (consciousness) already knows what you need.“
So why are you broke?
How can you trust that Daddy, the universe, Life, will provide for you, when it hasn’t been doing so? This is where it gets risky and exciting: This formula doesn’t work unless you are conscious of it and conscious of God as a direct experience. It works when you are (a) tuning in to the actual experience of that Oneness and (b)you know that it will take care of you. (a) on it’s own is not enough — for example, just experiencing some blissful state at the end of a 10-day retreat or 10-hour lovemaking. Yes, that may be your direct experience of God but if you are still operating on the general human belief matrix, you will separate this experience from your physical life.
You won’t really know that this experience, being an experience of Oneness, is telling you that it is taking care of you right through your own consciousness. There is a certain re-education that I, for one, have needed. That is why we have enlightened teachers, and I really like Jesus as a teacher because he emphasized this. I didn’t know this about Jesus until I started reading Joel Goldsmith’s 40+ books (see this blog post).
Even though Jesus obviously was experiencing Oneness, Samadhi, God, and perhaps even learned this from journeying to the Far East, he added the factor of love and complete safety and care. He didn’t just talk about consciousness, or mindfulness, or satori. He also healed massive numbers of people, and did other miracles like creating abundant food for a large crowd. Have you been tricked (by Eastern spiritual memes) into thinking that these miracles were some kind of “trick?” They were the natural expression of a being in Oneness consciousness, a being who said, “Greater things than this will you do yourselves.”
Ask this, in your true heart, relaxing your layers of disappointment and cynicism: If it’s really God or Oneness that you are experiencing, why wouldn’t it also handle your issues of love, health, supply and life purpose? How sad that so many of us (including me, for part of my life) have been brainwashed by certain spiritual teachings into believing that the highest spiritual experiences don’t include these essential human needs. When you are brainwashed in this way, you end up very spiritual and very poor. Or very spiritual and very (fill in the blanks).
Yet there is definitely a Massive Leap of Faith involved in transitioning from the metaphysical (I control my reality) to the mystical (a great Love controls my reality, if I trust it). This leap may not sound very attractive, if you are still caught up in the metaphysical, hoping that if you just get it right, things will work out. I mean, you couldn’t pay me enough to try bungee-jumping, and you may feel the same about giving up trying to control and manipulate your reality. In fact, it may sound like a death. And of course, entering the Mystical dimension IS a death, not for our body, and not exactly for our ego; we will still have an ego — very useful! — but won’t believe we ARE it. A death for our sense of self.
Yet it is also a birth. And that birth, which we can have without yet another reincarnation — yet another leaving the body to realize who we are and what we are really doing here –– is what many of us have been born for, this time, at this point in history.
The birth into the Mystical dimension is the most thrilling, and sometimes terrifying, transition that can happen to a human. Is your soul, your incarnate in-the-body soul, trying to lead you into this dimension? Do you know it really exists, other than in your coffee table Rumi book? Do you know that there is such a dimension, or state of consciousness (but it is dynamic and real, not a “state”) in which you not only experience some kind of “witness consciousness” or “space,” but also, know in your gut and then in your practical experience that all your needs are abundantly met, in right timing. You know you are cared for. You can stop worrying, and become wavy?
Don’t Worry, Be Wavy is not a gimmicky meme but an actual promise.
If you feel you are trying to go through the transition I have described above, and perhaps it’s not going so well for you, and is feeling an awful lot like things falling apart, dying, perhaps even you dying... please call me, or email me. I’m available to support you, one way or another.
