Can you relate? Baby Bear is always struggling. Everything in his life is either good or bad, and trying to control the "slippage" is exhausting, depressing, demoralizing, worrying, scary, and pointless. And that's just on a good day!
Everything in Bear's life is good (when mama licks and feeds him and his siblings aren't fighting for the nipple) or bad (when she kicks him away as the runt of the pack, explaining that there just aren't enough nipples!).
We live in a ridiculous world or dimension that in Iwave teaching I'm calling 2-D, meaning a dimension of Twoness. This is the Land of the Knowledge of Good and Evil that Adam and Eve "fell" into. Previously they had been living in Oneness, in Eden, completely taken care of in every way.
This "good and evil" consciousness is sometimes called "duality," and everyone, absolutely everyone, especially in Eastern teachings, goes on and on about it. How many times have we heard that "dualistic mind is the problem." It sees things in terms of opposites. Yada yada yada. Right diagnosis!
And the solution? Usually the prescription is to just get the hell out of Dodge. Watch that "Monkey Mind" and you will separate from that illusory world of struggle. You will stop reacting to it. It will still be there, but you will stop reacting. You only have control over your reactions, not the events "out there."
Now I'm not saying that we have absolute control over things, in a kind of "The Secret" way of "creating realities" through thinking and visualizing. (Although actually, that––i.e. Metaphysics/Psychology–– is a very important part of the journey of consciousness, because if you don't learn how your inner patterns of limited and negative thinking are already being reflected back in your so-called "outer" world, and then learn how to shift patterns of thought that are keeping you stuck, then you really can't graduate to a real, lasting experience of Oneness. Of course, many do skip over this "metaphysical" or "psychological" phase of their journey, and attempt to storm the gates of Oneness leaving a mind-created world still disowned outside the gates. This is the battalion of sleeping guards at the gate that I wrote about in the last post. In my experience, they will get you!)
However, even beyond that, the popular idea that the world and the events in it are real and I just have to control my reactions is actually flawed, in my experience. Of course, it is relatively true. There are plenty of situations where this realization is the right next step on a person's journey.
Yet… I hardly dare say this, but this is the whole point of the difference between Western and Eastern mysticism that has blown my mind and changed my life––see earlier post on The Infinite Way, and all other posts. (And by the way, I spent 12 years of my life as a monk, practicing and studying Eastern spiritual philosophies, so I'm not a newbie, and I'm not theorizing. I know the incredible beauty and value of Eastern spiritual teachings that has drawn so many Westerners to identify as Buddhists, or Yogis, or Kirtan singers, or Zennies, or lovers of the Dalai Lama. I'm right there with you. I still read extensively in the Eastern spiritual literature, and even last year, travelled thousand of miles to be with a teacher of Advaita Vedanta.)
Yet… and this is a huge YET (note I'm avoiding the words A HUGE BUT!)… there is a subtle, but essential difference between what, in my life experience, I have found actually works, and what doesn't work. Isn't that the whole point? Do we want to be happy (etc.) or right?––as A Course in Miracles asks us.
I have longed for an inner liberation coupled with an abundant flow of a kind of blessed life that I felt very very deeply to be my birthright. It's very common to shame that part of ourselves that has these deep desires for a sacred, benevolent life here on earth––but that shaming is just an old spiritual meme whose time has come (to be laughed out of the meme-field). At first I believed the almost-unquestioned spiritual truism that "in here" is where Reality lies, and you just have to deal with the unreal world of opposites "out there." This is the general meme promoted by most teachings that use the word "duality" or non-dual. (I'm going to use the word "Twoness," so you don't immediately categorize what I'm saying as yet another reiteration of this super-viral meme).
No! nononononono! There is no world of opposites "out there" that you just have to suck it up and deal with (mindfully of course!) and control your reactions to. It's a projection! Of course, it's not just YOUR projection. It is a MASSIVE mass-consciousness projection that Western mysticism calls "universal hypnotism," "mental images," "error," and so on. And it has been going on for a very long time. Layers and layers and layers of human thought creating insane structures of pain (and pleasure). There is almost infinite historical, physical and psychological evidence for the "reality" of that world out there.
And yet, when you realize that there is only ONE Reality, and that the other apparent, so-called reality is your (and everyone else's) Twoness imagination, amazing miracles start to happen. This is the proof of the New Mystical Pudding. It's like walking through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia (in a good season!). If you live in a world of Oneness, inside AND OUT, then it lives in you, you experience it literally, practically, handling all areas of your life. The strife you thought was "out there" ––even if out there meant your body, starts to disappear. All areas of life start to move into more Goodness, a type of flowing, generous, abundant goodness that has no opposite.
I promise you, the joy and shock of discovering this is beyond your wildest dreams. I am not just selling the same-old, same-old spiritual story about how "you" (whoever that is) have to learn to control "your" consciousness so you can be more mindful, aware, or more neutral, or something. And I'm certainly not saying you should think positively to manifest abundance. You've already done that (or the other), and it was an excellent station, but don't get off the train!. I'm talking about walking with your whole body and emotions and heart and soul into the Kingdom of Heaven, ON EARTH.
Do you get that (whether I am making it up or not) there is a distinction between what I am pointing at and the usual memes of spiritual growth? There is a different doorway that is almost undiscovered. I know very, very few people who have actually gone through it, and many of the best-known ones don't even know how they got through, and have picked up an Eastern-style teaching to try to get others through. But that wasn't how they got through. There is no doubt in my mind that they were suddenly shifted because of long, long choosing of Love, trusting in Love (probably in other lifetimes).
It's all about LOVE. The universe is not just loving, it is Love. It loves YOU (whoever you experience yourself to be) and is capable of guiding you back to who you really are: one who lives in Love as a palpable experience.
What I'm calling the New Mystic is one who is learning this new, more integrated path into Oneness. It's not quite the same as the traditional one. Even though Jesus, the great Western mystic, taught what I am describing, Christianity could not have more perfectly missed the point. But other mystics have come along and open doors for us. There is a new pathway. Why wouldn't there be? The universe is always evolving and changing, and it took everything in the universe interacting and dancing together to bring us to this point.
The new doorway into Oneness, which is the basis of all these blog entries, is actually what has made ALL the difference for me (and many students/clients) between teachings that ultimately fail and make us feel like nothing, in the negative personal sense––like spiritual and worldly failures––versus a more integrated teaching that actually works and makes us feel like we are dissolving into A Great Nothing that is more like an abundant, loving Great Something. Or, yes, a Great Someone. A Being that loves us individually, tenderly, beyond our wildest dreams.
But it's rough-going out in the world of Twoness, which most people, including you and me, take without question most of the time to be "the world." We may have heard that there isn't really a world, as such, but that it is all perceived within and through our consciousness, but really, that seems like bullshit when you're operating heavy machinery, doesn't it? Especially the heavy machinery of your bank account, relationships, health and work.
In the dimension of Twoness, we are always working, working, working, working, physically or mentally, (all very mindfully, of course!) to convert "evil" to "good"… kinda like this:
And what's wrong with that? Shouldn't we make these efforts? Isn't that the purpose of human life?
Well, it is until it isn't. How's that working for you?
There IS an alternative. There is another world, another universe, another "dimension" which I will call "1-D", a Oneness dimension, to distinguish it from the word "Oneness" which is bandied about almost as meaninglessly as Heart, etc.
My experience of my so-called life and what is really going on is so different I don't really know how to explain it yet. I'm not perfect, right and done or fully-established in Oneness. Yet my life is extraordinary. And I feel connected most of the time to a living, vibrant presence that appears in my experience as every needed thing. No struggle required. No batteries required because I'm plugged into the mains.
If you would like my help, my private practice is pretty much full, so the best thing right now (5/23/14) would be to take one of the last spots in my 1-Day Training on June 8.
